SpendsomeQuality Time:

5 Simple Ways to Spend More Time With a Dog

21st century life is chaotic for everyone, but we can make time for dogs without very much effort or spending a lot of time.  Below are some ideas on how to do just that.

1) TAKE YOUR DOG ALONG, whether running errands, picking up the kids or stopping by your office, your dog wants TO GO!  Getting your dog or cat out and about will save you many hassles of bad behavior when it is necessary to take your pet.  I had a kitten once who I took everywhere.  On our last vacation with the dogs, he ran out the door of the hotel (fear-where has he gone, terror- I will not get him back, relief-) Just as the dogs had done, Bruce ran and jumped into the van and was ready for the next leg home.

2) SLEEP TOGETHER, a dog or cat with a body temp of at least 102 degrees is a wonderful heating blanket.

3) FIND THINGS YOU BOTH LIKE TO DO. We live on a beautiful Island and our wonderful train committed has set aside fantastic trails (mind the leash laws) for our enjoyment.  Take a Hike and watch for the whales.  I know cats are not known hikers, but my cat Celio and I use to do False Bay once a week.  I did have to watch for Eagles, and we did have to practice before we tried it without the leash.

4) DO SOME DELEGATING. If you don't live alone, family members can share in the fun of coming up with ideas to include the furry family or just share in the responsibility.  As for those lucky enough to live alone... call a friend and share on of those hikes.

5) TRY MULTI-TASKING.  Why not use the time when cooking dinner or lunch as a training session to learn to sit and roll over. Use those shredded carrot sticks in both your salad and as rewards for a lesson learned. Cats may need a little something besides vegetables, try a little slice of tuna to stand on those hind legs.  Though you may not think so, MOST cats will not work for carrots.

Beginning in December APS-FH will begin kennel kids, a new community outreach program for children grades K-6.  The kennel kids program is focused on getting kids excited and involved at the shelter to promote responsible pet ownership and animal kindness.  We will have an AKC Ambassador giving presentations on several subjects beginning with safety around dogs at the grade school, a sign in desk and bulletin board just for our young volunteers, a program with SJI Library where the Island Tail Tutors will have scheduled canine assisted reading times, classes and activities just for members of the kennel kids, a dedicated web page on the shelter site and a newsletter of their own, THE TAIL TIMES.

For more information, to sign up or to volunteer contact Tawny Martel through the shelter office.

Dear Animal Advocate

TAXPAYERS . . .

Introduced by Rep. Thaddeus McCotter, H.R. 3501—known as the Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years (“HAPPY”) Act—is a federal bill that would reward responsible pet parents by allowing them to keep more money in their pockets come tax time.

We all want to give our animal companions the best care we possibly can, but it seems that pet care costs are always on the rise—and these days, it’s harder than ever to stretch the family budget. That’s why, which would amend U.S. tax code to allow qualifying pet care expenses, including veterinary care, to be tax-deductible.

This means that when you prepare your income taxes, money you spent on pet care that year would count as non-taxable income—and you can deduct up to $3,500 per year!

Please help us support the HAPPY Act, H.R. 3501 by sending an email to your U.S. Representative and urge him/her to support and cosponsor!

'FREE' GOOD DEED -

Animal Rescue

Hi, all you animal lovers. This is pretty simple...The Animal Rescue Site has asked for help in clicking daily to meet their quota of getting free food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.  It takes less than a minute (How about 20 seconds) to go to their site and click on the purple box 'fund food for animals' for free. This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.  Here's the web site...Pass On!
