Lopez Island
Lopez is the sleepiest of the “Big Three” islands north of Seattle (San
Juan, Orcas and Lopez) and getting
to Lopez is easy as several scheduled ferries make frequent trips from
the mainland. Lopez has the most
friendly and rural feeling, for instance, the island
tradition of drivers waving to passing motorists lives on.
While Lopez is known more for sleeping, eating and relaxing than for
nightlife, it is home to small shops,
café style dining, and unlimited character. Cycling is
perhaps the most noted recreation on the island with
a scenic 30-mile loop, a relatively flat terrain and very limited
traffic regarded as the best in the San Juan
Islands.
While the island and these cabins are most notable
for cycling and resting & relaxing, the Island has a
number of
recreational activities to get out and enjoy:
- Hiking: Hike a
half-mile to the rocky shoreline of Shark Reef Park.
- Beach Combing:
Stroll the mile-long beach at Spencer Spit State Park.
- Kayaking: Take a
guided tour or rent a kayak for a leisurely tour.
- Golfing: Every hole
of the golf course offers a view of the Olympic Mountains.
- Wine Tasting: Lopez
Island Vineyards specializes in organically grown grapes.
-
Wildlife Viewing: Outdoor enthusiasts, bird watchers and sea lion
lovers love it here!
