Why I Ran for County Auditor

My motivation:
This is an exciting time in
San Juan
County
government.
We are in the process of transitioning to a new form of government,
with new positions and new responsibilities.
At the same time, we are converting to a new accounting system, one
which affects virtually all county departments, either directly or
indirectly. It’s important
at this critical time that we proceed with clarity and wisdom, and that we
make sound management decisions, in order to lay the groundwork for
efficient and effective government.
There is a good match between my skills and the skills needed
by the
county
Auditor
to see us through this
time of change. I have a
strong background in accounting, having served as chief
financial officer in my own small businesses and financial advisor to many
other businesses. As an
accountant, I am focused and detail-oriented, with an obsessive attention
to accuracy—essential skills in the transition to a new accounting
system. As former co-owner of a
computer business, I also have familiarity with computer systems and
training which will help with this transition.
Finally, in addition to accounting and computer skills, I have
management skills and experience. I
hold an MBA from
Stanford
University
and spent six years
at IBM, four of them in management. I
have managed small businesses of my own, and currently consult with other
business owners in the management of their businesses.
