Personal Information
I’ve been married to George Johnson for 28 years.
We have two grown daughters. Sara
Grace, 25, is working as a guidance counselor in a K-8 school in
East Palo Alto,
California. Cara, 22, is working as
Medical and Scientific Affairs Assistant for the American Lung Association of
Washington in
Seattle. In June of 2006 Cara married
Mustafa Al Gamal, an Egyptian citizen whom she met while volunteering in
Cairo. Mustafa is now a permanent
resident here, and the two are living in
Seattle
while Mustafa completes his college education.
In 2005 we were host parents to Maram Hajji, a Saudi
Arabian high school student. Maram
attended
Spring
Street
School
while she was on the island. Arriving
in August as a shy, homesick 15-year-old with very little English, she
blossomed during her year here into an outgoing and articulate young
woman. We hope to visit her in
Saudi Arabia in the next couple of years.
For years, most of my volunteer time went into 4-H.
I led the sheep club on
San Juan
Island
for many years, and my children raised sheep, goats, chickens, ducks, and
cattle. After the girls left
for college, I remained involved as a livestock superintendent at the fair
for another five years. I am
also a WSU Livestock Master and have spoken at a small farm seminar
co-hosted by the Extension Office and the Conservation District.
In addition to 4-H, I have served on the boards of
Wee Care Day Care, the Animal Protection Society, the County Fair and
Dollars for Scholars San Juan Island.
I am currently Treasurer of Dollars for Scholars.
I am also an active volunteer at the San Juan Community Theatre.
My volunteer work at the theatre has been primarily “front of house”—that
is, as house manager, host & usher—but I have enjoyed a couple of
forays onto the stage.
